Japan Plans High-Speed Wireless Communications System
March 24, 2006
The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has planned to set up high-speed wireless networks for enterprises and home users by deploying upgraded WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) technology and UWB (Ultra Wide Band) systems, whose data rate is five times faster than fiber-optical lines, yet data transmission of these systems is limited to one room. The advanced WLAN technology delivers data at a speed of 100MB per second and is able to send more than one high-definition TV program at a time. The UWB system, capable of connecting home appliances, PCs, and recording equipment with the Internet, allows for simultaneous reception of 50 TV programs. The initiative will improve the data communications environment in buildings in which it is difficult to deploy fiber-optical lines.
